A good car wash hose doesn’t leak, doesn’t cut off water supply and doesn’t get all tangled up. This is essential to an overall pleasant and efficient car wash experience.

However, there’s a big difference between car wash hose materials, hose wall constructions, different hose diameters, different hose lengths, fixed length or expanding with pressure… It’s not easy to make the right choice.

In fact, to most people it’s clear as mud…

No worries, let us guide you through all these different options so you can “reel in” the best hose for your specific budget and requirements.

Check out our favorite car wash hoses:

Things To Consider When Buying A Car Wash Hose

Car Wash Hose Material

Not all car wash hoses are created equally. There are several different hose materials with different properties, uses and budgets in mind.

These are the car wash hose materials to consider:

  • Braided Vinyl (PVC)

Most budget car wash hoses are made of braided vinyl or PVC. They are lightweight, and they most often come with fixed screw-on connectors.

Most vinyl hoses are 3-ply, constructed in three layers. Some “heavy-duty” ones are 5-ply. More layers is better, of course, but even most 5-layer ones won’t last very long for outside use.

They are also hard to uncoil and more prone to kinking. It’s like the saying goes: what you pay is what you get… However, you can make them last longer if you store them inside. It’s mostly UV that kills them.

  • Stainless Steel Jacket

A 304 stainless steel protective jacket shields the soft PVC hose wall from UV and mechanical deterioration, making this type of hose among the toughest hoses out there. These car wash hoses are fitted with fixed screw-on connectors.

The downside is that they cannot be repaired if they spring a leak and cannot be cut to size. Because of their stainless steel jacket, they are heavier than most too. You also wanna be careful not to scratch your car paint by dragging the rough SST hose alongside your car while washing it.

  • Rubber

Rubber car wash hoses, or rather hoses reinforced with natural rubber, are heavier but last longer than the above. The downside is that sooner or later, they will start to leave black residue on your hands because of oxidation of the outer layer. They can have a distinct rubber smell too. You wanna consider this if you plan to store the hose somewhere inside.

  • TPE

Though more expensive than vinyl or PVC, TPE (Thermo Plastic Elastomer) is tougher and lighter

Most TPE hoses come standard with quick connectors which can be replaced if they malfunction. They can be cut to size so quick connector fittings can be added. TPE car wash hoses can also easily be repaired by cutting out the leaking part and joining them with a quick connector repair piece

If treated well, TPE car wash hoses can last a lifetime.

  • EPDM

The most durable Heavy Duty car wash hoses are made of layered, reinforced EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer), a synthetic rubber. They are highly weatherproof, ozone- and UV- resistant and stay flexible even in cold weather. If you don’t abuse them, they will also last a lifetime.

It’s the classic type of quality hose that’s very popular among professional gardeners, farmers and contractors. Contrary to natural rubber, you won’t get the black residue all over your hands when you handle them.

  • Polyurethane (PU)

Polyurethane hoses perform similar to EPDM or natural rubber hoses but weigh much less. The outer shell on a polyurethane hose is made of the same material as roller skates wheels. This protective film is colorless and extremely abrasion resistant.

  • Expandable Car Wash Hoses

In the past few years, cheap flexible hoses that expand in length under pressure have become very popular. The inner tube is made from latex material with a woven synthetic outer sleeve. Expandable car wash hoses have a fixed connector on both ends.

Although they can be very practical, they are more prone to leaking and are not as durable as classic hoses. If you leave them lying in the sun under pressure on a hot summer’s day, they can rupture and they cannot be repaired if they leak. Most of them only last a few seasons.

The upside is that this type of car wash hose is cheap, lightweight and doesn’t need a reel.

Car Wash Hose Diameter

Car wash hose inside diameters (ID) range from 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8″ to 3/4” with the most popular size in the USA being 5/8 Inch.

Choosing a hose diameter is always a trade-off. A larger diameter can transport more water in less time, but is heavier to lug around, less agile and it takes more storage space. There’s much more hose length on a standard reel with 3/8” hose than with 3/4” for example.

The small diameter hose will be much easier to reel in too.

If you’re looking for a lot of water volume to quickly hose your car or for a fast bucket refill, a large hose diameter is definitely better. But if you’re gonna use your hose mainly to feed your pressure washer, a small diameter is all you’ll need. Contrary to what most people think, even for the most powerful pressure washer you’ll only need a small water volume. For your pressure washer, even the smallest hose diameters will do.

Car Wash Hose Diameter vs Water Pressure

It is a misconception that a larger hose diameter increases water pressure. The maximum water pressure you can get at the end of your car wash hose is determined by the water pressure entering the hose, at the faucet or pump.

A bigger diameter in theory means the hose can transport more water volume, but the main limiting factor will be the diameter of your domestic piping which normally is 1/2” or in some cases 3/4“.

You can’t get more water volume out of a car wash hose than the volume that goes in at the other end.

You should however also take in account that the biggest bottleneck (meaning the spot with the smallest inside diameter) in the water supply is always the deciding factor. Most of the time hose connectors, shut-off valves and the hose nozzle are the main bottlenecks.

Although it seems logical to buy a car wash hose with an inside diameter that matches the inside diameter of your faucet, it’s better to oversize the hose diameter one step. The reason is that connectors and attachments always have a smaller inside diameter than the hose it connects to. This creates a bottleneck that reduces water flow and pressure.

If you oversize your hose one step, you will counter this. It’s worth exploring this option because it’ll minimize water volume loss.

Car Wash Hose Length

Most car wash hoses come in standard lengths of 25 ft, 50 ft, 75 ft or 100 ft.

Hose length is an important factor to consider. A longer car wash hose will be much heavier than a short one, ones you’ve reeled it in. Not only does the length of the hose material have an impact on total weight, but also the water inside the hose. Most commonly, the hose will be full or at least partially filled with water after use. So, the longer the hose, the more hose material and water you’ll be hauling.

You don’t wanna buy a hose that is too long for your use because it will need a larger, heavier reel and more storage space.

Hose length also greatly impacts water pressure at the end of your hose. The longer the hose, the lower the water pressure.

Car Wash Hose Length vs Water Pressure

Water pressure is greatly determined by the length of your hose and the cleanliness of the inner hose wall. Here’s why:

It’s important to keep your hose as short as possible because for every 10 feet of hose you lose about 2 PSI of pressure. Sounds like a bold statement, but that’s a scientific fact! This means that you will only get about half as much pressure at the end of a 100’ car wash hose than directly at the water bib.

Also, don’t just discard obvious pressure loss like leaking connectors or a puncture either, because it all adds up.

A less well-known fact is that an old, contaminated car wash hose decreases water pressure at maximum volume. This is caused by roughness on the inner hose wall from bacterial and fungal growth and mineral deposits.

This roughness increases friction between the waterflow and the inner wall dramatically, just like algae and clam growth on a boat hull create much more drag, slowing the boat down. This buildup can bring water pressure down dramatically because it decreases the flow rate.

Simply put: dirty inner hose walls drain pressure energy. It’s a hidden pressure killer.

Hose Thread vs Hose Internal Diameter (ID)

Most outdoor faucets or hose bibs are 1/2“ ID (Inside Diameter) but have 3/4“ MHT (Male Hose Thread = thread on the outside).

So don’t be fooled by a 3/4” MHT size or 3/4” FHT size (Female Hose Thread = thread on the inside) advertised on any type of screw-on hose bib connector. This does not mean that the inside diameter (ID) is 3/4”!

3/4” FHT or MHT are the most popular hose bib threads, which actually means that they have around 1/2” ID (Inside Diameter), not 3/4” ID!

The best matching hose for a standard 3/4“ MHT faucet is a 5/8“ hose connected with a screw-on 3/4“ FHT connector. In most cases this means the ID of the hose will be slightly bigger than the ID of the faucet, which will guarantee optimal water volume and pressure.

Though expandable car wash hoses have a bad reputation when it comes to quality and longevity, it has to be said that a lot of improvements have been made since they were first mass-marketed.

Our hose of choice is a prime example: it has a triple instead of a single latex wall. It is protected by a durable knitted polyester casing that expands to 3x its length when under pressure.

This expandable car wash hose has solid brass fittings instead of plastic ones, a massive brass shut-off valve and a double-layer, leak-proof design. These improvements make it a much more reliable lightweight multipurpose hose than most of its competitors.

A practical 8-pattern rotary spray nozzle is also included.

Customers comment that the build quality is superior to all the expandable hoses they’ve tried before. Many state that they went and bought more of these hoses because they like ‘em so much. We have to agree however, that none of the expandable hoses on the market today can compete with a classic hose when it comes to durability and longevity. That’s a fact. But that’s not why people buy these hoses, it’s because they want convenience. And it is…very!

PROS:

  • Compact, lightweight, easy to carry and store
  • No kinks, no tangles
  • Good brass fittings
  • More durable than most expandable hoses

CONS:

  • Not as durable as classic hoses

Final Thoughts

You wanna buy a car wash hose diameter and length that fits your needs. Excessive hose length will lower water pressure at the nozzle.

If you’re looking for a dedicated car wash hose, a bigger diameter isn’t necessarily better. To feed a pressure washer, you don’t need a high water volume.  Even if you don’t use a pressure washer but a hose and nozzle, a smaller diameter like 1/2 will work just fine. After all, you’re not going to wash the USS Nimitz, are you?

On the other hand, if you’re also gonna use the hose to water the garden and want to connect sprinklers to it, diameter (water volume) and length do matter.

However, you should consider that a bigger hose diameter has a big impact on the weight of the hose and reel you’ll have to haul. The bigger the diameter of the hose, the heavier it will be. That’s simply because water weighs a lot and there’s more of it in a larger diameter hose.

That’s also true when it comes to car wash hose length: longer = heavier.

A bigger diameter hose also needs a larger reel, hanger or stand which will take more space to store. The same goes for hose length. That’s why, generally speaking, a 50’ long 5/8” car wash hose is a good compromise and is most popular in the USA.

Happy detailing!

FAQ

How Long Should A Car Wash Hose Be ?

The ideal length of a car wash hose depends on the distance from your car to your hose bib. Generally, a 50ft hose length is ideal.

You don’t want to buy a hose that is much too long. A longer hose will have less pressure at the nozzle, will be much heavier and need a bigger reel that will need more storage space.

How To Store A Car Wash Hose?

You wanna store your car wash hose inside or anywhere away from the ground and out of reach of rodents and pets. If you do store it outside, then make sure that it’s out of direct sunlight. This will prevent UV damage, premature discoloration and aging.

To prevent deformation, a hose should be stored on a purpose-built reel or a hose hanger, never on a nail or hook. Keep your hose away from heat sources.

Always drain your hose before storing it to prevent algae and fungal growth. Never leave your car wash hose outside in freezing temperatures or it may burst.

  • TPE
Though more expensive than vinyl or PVC, TPE (Thermo Plastic Elastomer) is tougher and lighter. Most TPE hoses come standard with quick connectors which can be replaced if they malfunction. They can be cut to size so quick connector fittings can be added. TPE car wash hoses can also easily be repaired by cutting out the leaking part and joining them with a quick connector repair piece.

Here’s why: It’s important to keep your hose as short as possible because for every 10 feet of hose you lose about 2 PSI of pressure.

How We Did Our Review

For this review we dove deep in all manufacturer specifications and spent hours comparing and assessing customer reviews to see what people think about different products in different situations. We also consulted professional car detailers and asked for their opinion. We only recommended car wash hoses that worked great for the vast majority of car enthusiasts and professionals alike and filtered out unreliable sources. Armed with a critical eye and with our own experience under our belt, we connected the dots and selected the best products for each specific category. Our goal is to make it easy for you to select a car wash hose according to your specific needs. With this thorough analysis as a guide, we were able to find some pretty awesome stuff out there! In our review we didn’t list products that underperformed. We only recommend “Best” products, not second choices. We won’t waste your time telling you how badly this or that hose performed.

Its knitted nylon reinforcements make it suitable for light car wash duties and other watering chores around the garden without the risk of easily kinking or bursting, even in cold weather. Also, this very affordable hose should not be used for high pressure water pumps, just for standard domestic water pressure. Most customers agree that this is the best hose you can buy at half the price of most hoses.
