A car wash mitt, the most popular successor of the old school cellulose sponge, has rapidly become the go-to item for car detailing enthusiasts because it is so easy to work with on even the most delicate surfaces.

Remember the days when people lovingly scrubbed their daily driver with a standard “soft” sponge? (Maybe you still do?)

Despite all these well-meant efforts, scratches and marring (very light scratches) were an inevitable byproduct of this type of cellulose sponge. Turns out those “soft” sponges aren’t so soft after all…

More gentle materials like microfiber, chenille, lambswool and synthetic wool in different forms and shapes, do a much better job at removing dirt without scratching your car’s paint.

The mitt is the most popular shape of the bunch because it literally fits like a glove (or a mitt in this case).

Check out our selection of car wash mitts:

Best Overall Car Wash Mitt

Best Overall
  • Material: Premium microfiber
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: elastic cuff / good fit / lining has cord to hold on to
  • Dimensions: ‎11.81 x 7.87 x 1.97 inches

We’ve chosen the WM2 as our best car wash mitt, because the guys from Gtechniq are obsessed when it comes to improving stuff, and it shows! This mitt is in a league of its own.

The first thing we noticed when we unwrapped it is that the mitt’s exterior fibers have a very light consistency. It’s made up of different kinds and lengths of microfiber strands which makes it glide effortlessly over clear coat making it less likely to scratch your paint.

This microfiber car wash mitt releases dirt easily in the rinsing bucket, which is crucial. We could hardly find any dirt particles left behind after a thorough rinse.

Inside the glove there is a cord to hold on to. It prevents the car wash mitt from slipping from your hand. However, the cuff is so good and tight we hardly  had to hold the cord to stop it from falling off our hand.

This mitt really sets the benchmark in all aspects. Our testing confirms the 1000+ reviews who give this premium product a near-perfect rating.

Highly recommended!

PROS:

  • High-end quality is noticeable in every aspect
  • Not once did it slip off our hand because of the snug cuff and a cord on the inside to hold on to
  • Super soft on delicate surfaces

CONS:

  • Premium pricing

Best Budget Car Wash Mitt

  • Dimensions: 8″x10″
Best Budget
  • Material: ‎Chenille
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: elastic cuff / microfiber lining
  • Dimensions: 8″x10″

This premium chenille car wash mitt is scratch-free, super plush and very absorbent. It has a double stitched elastic cuff that holds your hand tightly in place. Its cool lime green color makes it easy to spot dirt particles too, which is a great bonus to prevent scratches.

We’ve been testing this mitt for a couple of years on different cars and it’s still going strong. We haven’t been gentle on it, and found this mitt is very good at tackling caked dirt too. After plenty of use, the color hasn’t faded either despite the fact that it’s machine-washed and tumble-dried after every car wash. It’s still super soft too because we always use CG Microfiber Wash

Although some customer reviews report that seams break and the cuff comes off, we haven’t had any of these issues yet.

Some reviewers don’t like that it holds so much suds, they claim the mitt gets too heavy for comfort. We think that’s an upside though, cause this means less bucket-runs. If you want a lighter mitt, we recommend simply wringing out excess suds.

We’re convinced you’ll get the most bang for your buck buying this awesome, yet very affordable car wash mitt duo. You can buy just one too, but the 2-pack is the better deal.

PROS:

  • The 2-pack is an awesome deal
  • Holds a ton of suds, resulting in less bucket-runs
  • Uniform, light color helps determine the amount of contamination present in the chenille

CONS:

  • This “big gun” is less suited for detailed cleaning of door handles, grilles,…

Best Premium Deal

The reason why we chose these car wash mitts as our Best Premium Deal is because they are premium quality at a discount price. The Cyclone Mitt from The Rag Company, America’s premier microfiber products brand, is a super soft 70/30 premium quality South-Korean microfiber blend.

What’s immediately noticeable, is that the elastic cuff fits tightly around the wrist. This prevents the mitt from slipping off. The mitt’s size and thickness is just right: not too heavy but large enough to handle bigger vehicles too.

The washing process is effortless and controlled and even the tighter areas like under door handles can be cleaned with remarkable ease.

We can confirm the large amount of positive reviews that state that this mitt is very soft and won’t scratch your paint.

The Rag Company’s Cyclone Mitts come in a two-pack with two different colors: blue/white and gray/white. We recommend using one mitt for the most delicate and least soiled coatings while the other one can be reserved for dirtier parts like the area around the exhausts and the lower part of your vehicle. With two different colored mitts, you won’t scratch your paint accidentally using the wrong mitt during the washing process.

If there’s one detail we could change (it’s nit-picking, we know), it’s their color mix. We like light uniform colors better for mitts and towels because it’s easier to spot grit and dirt before it causes harm.

When you’re finished washing your car, these mitts can be hand- or machine washed, ready for the next car wash!

PROS:

  • Awesome Premium package deal
  • Super soft for scratch-free washing
  • Ergonomic: tight cuff, a good lining to grab on to
  • Very durable

CONS:

  • Mixed-color fibers make it harder to see dirt and grit

Best Hybrid Car Wash Mitt

Best Hybrid
  • Material: chenille / plush microfiber
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: elastic cuff / one size fits all
  • Dimensions: 8″x10″x1.5″
Best Hybrid
  • Material: chenille / plush microfiber
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: elastic cuff / one size fits all
  • Dimensions: 8″x10″x1.5″

This is a special kind of a 2-in-1 mitt, actually. That’s why they call it “Hybrid”. One side is chenille material and the other plush microfiber. The chenille side is ideal to handle the dirtier parts of your vehicle, while the super soft short-pile plush microfiber is the gentlest on materials like glass and chrome.

We found Meguiar’s Hybrid Wash Mitt very versatile to work with. The “noodles” hold a lot of soapy water to clean large areas in one go. Even larger dirt particles are safely encapsulated within the thick chenille layer. The plush side works very well to clean glass and chrome without leaving hardly any streaks.

Our experience is that this mitt releases its dirt load easily during the rinsing process. Closer inspection has shown that hardly any contaminants are left behind.

We would have liked the plush side in a different light color, like light orange, yellow or green. Any color but gray! It’s hard to determine if a light gray color is completely rinsed or clean, because most dirt leaves behind a grayish film.

We also think the small label on the outside of the cuff is a bad marketing decision. Although it’s soft nylon, it’s a scratching hazard nonetheless. It’s the first thing we cut off, as I’m sure most detailers will. But that’s a detail, pun intended.

PROS:

  • Works very well on dirt-caked surfaces as well as on delicate, lightly contaminated areas
  • Dirt particles can easily be distinguished on the bright orange color

CONS:

  • We’re not a fan of the plush’s gray color because it’s hard to tell if it’s dirty
  • Holds less suds than a mitt with two chenille sides

Best Lambswool Car Wash Mitt

Best Lambswool
  • Material: natural lambswool
  • Machine washable: No
  • Fit: elastic cuff
  • Dimensions: 12.1 x 8.7 x 2.5 inches
Best Lambswool
  • Material: natural lambswool
  • Machine washable: No
  • Fit: elastic cuff
  • Dimensions: 12.1 x 8.7 x 2.5 inches

This all natural 100% pure lambswool car wash mitt is soft, plush and dense. As an added bonus, it is eco-friendly, undyed and biodegradable. Using authentic materials has a certain charm to it, we think…

Mary Moppins’s mitt feels very soft. Size-wise it’s on the large end of the scale. It really held a lot of suds without deforming excessively. The cuff felt firm yet not overly tight. During the cleaning process, it was not difficult to hold on to it. After rinsing, any dirt still present in the mitt was readily visible in the off-white hide. That’s a big plus.

The large majority of people who use a Mary Moppins mitt say that if you’re in the market for this kind of mitt, this is the one to buy. Many say it’s the best real lambswool car wash mitt they’ve ever used.

There’s a downside to all real lambswool mitts, though: They’re not machine-washable and cannot be tumbled dry. They need to be thoroughly rinsed by hand after use and dried in open air. If you don’t treat them with care, they won’t last long.

PROS:

  • It’s an added value to work with authentic, natural materials
  • Cuff holds well and the mitt doesn’t deform much
  • Made from dense, high quality lambswool
  • Any dirt that’s left behind after rinsing can easily be detected in the white fur

CONS:

  • Needs to be thoroughly hand-rinsed and air-dried after each use or it won’t last long

Best Synthetic Wool Mitt

Best Synthetic Wool
  • Material: synthetic lambswool
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: non-slip double-stitched elastic cuff
  • Dimensions: ‎9.06 x 1.18 x 7.09 inches
Best Synthetic Wool
  • Material: synthetic lambswool
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: non-slip double-stitched elastic cuff
  • Dimensions: ‎9.06 x 1.18 x 7.09 inches

CG’s Bear Claw Car Wash Mitt is made of ultra-plush scratch-resistant synthetic lambswool that can hold a large amount of water and suds.

This fluffy looking mitt is actually surprisingly lightweight when dry for its size, weighing in at only about half a pound. It’s a completely different story when you lift it out of your soapy water bucket. It’s up to five times its weight when it’s wet! That’s how absorbant the material is. Because it holds that much suds, you can wash about a quarter of a normal size car with just one bucket run. Three or four bucket runs and you’re done! That’s a big advantage in our book.

It doesn’t only look fluffy, it’s very soft to the touch too. Some users complain that the fur gets caught under emblems and between panel gaps but in our experience it holds on to its fibers way better than its real sheepskin counterparts.

The Bear Claw didn’t scratch or mar our test car, although it has black metallic paint. That’s because Chemical Guys’s thick wooly mitt traps dirt and grime and holds it safely deep in its fur which prevents swirls and scratches. Some people comment that the synthetic fur clings to dirt too much, making it hard to rinse it out. Using our grit guard and washboard combo, rinsing was not a problem though. We strongly advise you to use the two-bucket method, like we always do…

When you’re done, rinse it under the faucet and chuck it in the washing machine. Like with any car wash mitt, use microfiber wash, select low temperature and never use fabric softener. You can just hang it to dry in open air or machine dry it for extra fluffiness.

If you’re looking for a big, fluffy car wash mitt, you’ll definitely love the Bear Claw. Don’t expect it to clean well in tight spots like between door handles and grills though. It is heavy too when it’s freshly soaked. Yep, free workout included!

PROS:

  • It covers a lot of ground fast and bucket runs are scarce
  • Because of its light color, grit can easily be detected before any harm is done
  • We love the feel of the material and its scratch-free action

CONS:

  • Because of its size and drenched weight, it can be hard to hold on to and it is heavier than most
  • Not for detailed cleaning in tight spots

Best For Wheels (XL / Loose Fit)

Best For Wheels (XL / Loose Fit)
  • Material: chenille / mesh microfiber
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: elastic cuff / XL glove with fingers
  • Dimensions: 8.5″x10″x1.5″
Best For Wheels (XL / Loose Fit)
  • Material: chenille / mesh microfiber
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: elastic cuff / XL glove with fingers
  • Dimensions: 8.5″x10″x1.5″

This 5-finger double-sided chenille car wash glove is an awesome solution to quickly, safely and effectively clean hard-to-reach areas, like wheels.

The chenille side is ideal to clean wheels because its fingers can reach places a mitt can’t get to. The microfiber mesh backside of the glove can be used to scrub your tire sidewalls. This dual wheel-and-tire wash car wash mitt truly is a nice addition to your car wash tool set. It holds lots of suds too.

If you have large hands or don’t mind your car wash glove flopping around, you’ll love this glove. If you want a glove that fits tightly, you should go for the Scrubit car wash gloves.

PROS:

  • A glove design is way better for wheels than any mitt
  • The chenille “noodles” clean the tightest spots with ease
  • The mesh backside is great to scrub the tire walls or nasty stains

CONS:

  • May be too big and loose for some (check out the Scrubit car wash gloves)
  • It’s hard to tell if the black mesh is dirty or not

Best For Wheels (Snug Fit)

Best For Wheels (Snug Fit)
  • Material: chenille
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: stretch / one size fits all
  • Dimensions: 10.6”x8.3”x1”
Best For Wheels (Snug Fit)
  • Material: chenille
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: stretch / one size fits all
  • Dimensions: 10.6”x8.3”x1”

For wheels, especially those with complicated spoke design, this is the way to go! This glove reaches small crevices and deep wheel lug holes that a bulky classic car wash mitt can’t get to.

The Scrubit chenille car cleaning glove feels comfortably snug and soft. In our experience it fits all sizes of hands, just like it says on the label, because it’s made of stretch material. Its chenille “noodles” are smaller than most, again to be able to reach the tightest spots.

The microfiber material doesn’t soak up too much suds so that the glove stays nimble to get in all nooks and crannies.

Scrubit also offers an alternative version with chenille on one and a medium-pile microfiber wash cloth on the other side. We liked the “all chenille” ones best because the “noodles” reach further into tight spots, typical to most wheel designs.

Customer testimonials are equally enthusiastic about these gloves. They praise their ability to easily glide in and out of tight wheel areas where a wheel brush can’t normally reach.

PROS:

  • We like the fact that they speed up the wheel cleaning process because the tight fit allows for agile movements
  • It’s easy to assess the glove’s cleanliness because of its light green color

CONS:

  • A tight cuff made of elastic material would make the gloves hold on to your hands even better

Best For Bug Removal

  • Material: chenille / mesh microfiber
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: non-slip elastic cuff / one size fits all / center stitching for extra grip
  • Dimensions: 8″x10″x2″
Best For Bug Removal
  • Material: chenille / mesh microfiber
  • Machine washable: Yes
  • Fit: non-slip elastic cuff / one size fits all / center stitching for extra grip
  • Dimensions: 8″x10″x2″

If you live in an area that’s bug-infested, you’ll know that bug splatter is harder to remove than most dirt. This wash mitt tackles that problem.

The ArmorAll wash mitt is double-sided: one side is “Noodle Tech” chenille material, while the other is black microfiber mesh. When we dipped this fluffy cushioned mitt into the soap bucket, it was instantly saturated with suds. And it can hold lots of it!

It has a smooth gliding action and encapsules dirt between its noodles preventing scratches. The inner lining has a lengthwise stitching to hold on to between index and middle finger, which gives more control and something to grab so it won’t slide off your hand.

We used the black mesh side to remove stubborn dirt like bird droppings and red maple tree sap. Worked like a charm. Bugs came off easily too, which can be a pain. The black mesh allows for a scrubbing action without being abrasive. It will not scratch your paint. Insect remains can, however. Rinse them off immediately.

This double-sided car wash mitt has a very high rating over hundreds of user reviews and most people say they would recommend this mitt to friends and family.

PROS:

  • We think it’s a must-have for people who live in bug-infested areas
  • It’s an awesome combo that enables you to wash your vehicle and remove those darn bugs without having to constantly switch gear
  • The middle stitching is a great idea to better hold on to the mitt

CONS:

  • It’s a pity that the mesh is black. It’s hard to check for dirt or grit.

Best For Large Vehicles

Best For Large Vehicles

Lacking a school bus or a 747 to test it on, we washed a large 4-door limo. Gotta tell you, it was a fast but very intensive car wash run. People with back or shoulder issues can stop reading now…

That this Mofo is huge is an understatement. It’s humongous! It drains about 1/3 of your bucket water with each soak and it is heavy like none of the above. The proven noodle chenille material holds on to a bucket load of debris while minimizing scratching.

This makes it the fastest cleaning mitt in our selection. Always in for a competition, we were done in 3 minutes flat! (and had to physically recuperate for 15) For the vertical panels we had to sometimes use both hands to move it around. At this speed, the limo wasn’t cleaned to perfection we have to admit. But from a couple of yards away it was pretty acceptable. And man, what a time saver!

Of course it’s not ideal for detailed cleaning but that’s a compromise you have to be willing to make. We do understand customers complaining about it being too big to be practical, but that’s a consideration you have to make for yourself.

PROS:

  • We love the huge surface it cleans with each pass
  • You can trust the CG chenille to be gentle on your paint
  • If you’re in a hurry, even large trucks can be cleaned with only two bucket runs because it holds that much suds

CONS:

  • Don’t buy this heavy Mofo if you have muscle issues of any sort
  • Has to be handled with two hands on most vertical surfaces
  • Not ideal for a detailed car wash
  • Can be hard to rinse because it fills half your bucket

What Is a Car Wash Mitt?

A car wash mitt is a car detailing aid that is specially designed to wash your car without leaving any scratches.

Why Should You Use a Car Wash Mitt?

Because a car wash mitt will greatly reduce the risk of making new scratches and swirl marks during the hand wash process.

A car wash mitt is made from absorbent, scratch-free material that encapsulates dirt particles safely between its fibers instead of on its surface. This way those gritty bits don’t scratch your car’s delicate surfaces like a classic sponge does.

It’s reusable and ergonomic and can be used on both sides. When one side is dirty, just flip it over to the other side and continue washing with fresh suds. When submerged in your car wash bucket, dirt particles that are trapped between the fibers are easily released.

Classic sponges on the other hand, hold on to the sharp dirt particles on their surface during the rinsing process. This turns their top layer into sand paper in no time.

Most car wash mitts are machine-washable too, allowing for even deeper cleaning after each car wash.

What Makes a Good Car Wash Mitt?

Material

First of all, the mitt has to be made from durable, soft, scratch-free material. This is essential to prevent making swirls and scratches during the washing process.

The mitt material has to capture sharp grit safely between its strands during the washing process but release it easily during the rinsing process.

Microfiber, lambswool or synthetic lambswool materials perform the best. Let’s take a closer look at each one of them:

Most car wash mitts are made of microfiber material, which is composed of very fine synthetic fibers. Quality, composition and price varies widely between manufacturers. Fiber density and length-mix also influence the microfiber’s properties. It does a good job at delicate cleaning.

Premium microfiber is generally composed of 70% polyester and 30% polyamide (70/30 blend) and is often manufactured in South Korea. This country is known for producing the world’s finest microfiber. Premium microfiber outperforms budget microfiber in softness, absorption and durability.

Chenille is a very popular mitt material. It looks like a bunch of noodles or caterpillars (“chenille” in French) glued to the mitt surface but is actually woven microfiber. It can hold tons of suds and is better suited for removing heavy dirt than a non-woven microfiber mitt.

A natural lambswool mitt is an excellent choice for delicate surfaces, but this type of mitt needs to be washed manually after each car wash and isn’t as durable as microfiber.

Synthetic lambswool is much more durable than natural lambswool and can be machine-washed. A synthetic lambswool mitt provides outstanding lubrication because it absorbs a large amount of suds. This prevents wash-induced scratches. Because of its plush nature, the synthetic material allows gritty particles to move into the thick fibers and away from the paint.

Mesh microfiber is excellent for non-abrasive scrubbing.
The holes in the mesh weave act as scrapers for removing soils and stubborn dirt. The mesh does however not scratch paint.

Plush microfiber is the softest family member. It’s great to use on delicate surfaces for a streak-free result.

Some car wash mitts are double-sided or hybrid. Hybrid means that one side has a different material than the other side of the mitt. Most popular are chenille mitts that have some kind of short-pile microfiber mesh or weave on the opposite side. Depending on the opposite side’s material, it can be used to scrub away insect guts, tree sap, bird poop,…(mesh weave) or for the most delicate surfaces like glass or chrome (pearly or plush weave).

Machine-Washable

Check that the mitt is machine-washable
During a machine wash, any dirt that’s left behind after a rinse or hand-wash will be removed, again preventing those particles from marring your car paint during your next car wash. That’s a big plus!

It’s important to know that natural lambswool mitts cannot be machine-washed and therefore need a very thorough hand wash after each use.

Fit

Although a car wash mitt is always a loose fit, a tight cuff can help keep a heavy, sud-soaked mitt on your hand more easily.
Some mitts have some sort of lining or rope to hold on to when you’re rinsing them, which is a nice feature.

Color

Avoid dark colored car wash mitts. Light colored ones are easier to inspect for grit and general cleanliness.

Car Wash Mitt Material Comparison

How we did our review

Over the years we’ve tried and tested a lot of different car wash mitts for our cars, because not all cars are the same (new metallic paint, aging paint, chrome, steel, plastic,…)

Some mitts ended up in the old rags basket very quickly, others gave us years of cleaning and detailing pleasure. For this review we also dove deep in the manufacturer specifications and looked at customer reviews to see what their experience was. We only recommend car wash mitts that did an excellent job for us and the vast majority of other car enthusiasts. We’ve selected mitts for different purposes, to make it easy for you to choose the right mitt for your car, depending on what you intend to use it for.

Final Thoughts

Which car wash mitt is the winner?

Well, that depends on what you plan to use it for.

Each of these 10 great car wash tools have their specific advantages:

  • To clean horizontal areas like hood, roof and trunk lid or to wash large vehicles fast, we adore the Chemical Guys Big Mofo
  • The most popular wheel cleaning glove definitely is Adam’s Car Wash Glove, and with reason: it gets the job done better and faster than a classic Mitt. Its tire scrub mesh is awesome too.
  • To go “where no man has gone before” in the wheel area, the Scrubit Glove is unsurpassable.
  • The Cyclone Car Wash Mitts shine in their simplicity: one for the low down dirty work and a different color for the upper cleaning. Both top quality, both scratch free. Less contamination. Awesome Premium deal!
  • With a broad fanbase, near perfect customer reviews and an affordable price, the Chemical Guys Chenille Car Wash Mitt hardly needs an introduction. It’s an all-rounder and deserves our Best Budget title.
  • If chenille won’t cut it for you when it comes to scrubbing off those darn bug splats, Armor All’s Double-Sided Car Wash Mitt is the solution. Its mesh side is harsh on bugs yet soft on paint.
  • Meguiar’s Hybrid Wash Mitt is the best hybrid mitt. The chenille side easily  lifts heavy dirt, while the opposite side smearlessly cleans delicate surfaces like glass or chrome with its short pile plush microfiber material.
  • Wanna go all eco and authentic? It’s not cheap but very sheep: Mary Moppins Pure 100% Lambswool Car Wash Mitt.
  • If the special care an authentic lambswool needs is a deal breaker for you, try Chemical Guys’s Bear Claw. It’s similar but much easier to clean and dry and lasts much longer.
  • If you don’t mind paying a premium to get the best: Gtechniq WM2 Microfibre Wash Mitt is Best Overall. You’ll hardly find bad reviews about it either.

Happy detailing!

FAQ’s

What Are Car Wash Mitts Made Of?

The most popular material for car wash mitts is microfiber.
This usually is a mix of polyester fiber for strength and ultra soft polyamide fibers for absorption.

Some are made of natural or synthetic lambswool.

What Is Chenille?

“Chenille” comes from the French language meaning “caterpillar”. And there’s no doubt about it: this microfiber material, often used in car wash mitts, actually looks like a bunch of caterpillars glued to a rag.

The reason why microfiber chenille material works so well for car wash purposes, is because of its wormy structure. These little “worms” easily clean in places that are hard to reach like grooves, seams, grolles, around stripes and badges…

This material also holds more contaminants safely away from the surface area. During the rinsing process however, it releases these dirt particles very easily. This is crucial to prevent trapped dirt particles from scratching your car’s paint.

These properties make it one of the most popular car wash materials out there.

Why Use a Lambswool Car Wash Mitt?

Some professional detailers still prefer pure natural lambswool over microfiber when it comes to car wash mitts. They claim it scratches even less on fragile surfaces. It’s also the ultimate ecological, biodegradable material of choice.

A drawback to many is that it has to be thoroughly hand-rinsed after each use and it can’t be machine-washed or tumble-dried. It takes longer to dry than microfiber and isn’t as durable.

It’s more of a choice of the heart, really…

Why Is It Bad To Wash Your Car With a Sponge?

Typical old-style car wash sponges are made of cellulose, a material that looks a bit like a very fine swiss cheese structure. These sponges are available in different grades from coarse to very fine and from firm to ultra soft.

Though this material feels soft and it captures dirt particles in its fibers, the problem is that it is very bad at releasing them. The dirt particles stick to the surface of the sponge and most of it can hardly be rinsed off. This clearly shows under a microscope.

It’s this trapped dirt that causes scratches and marring on your car’s paint. This is why cellulose sponges are OK for general household cleaning but are a definite no-no for cleaning your car.

When it comes to washing and detailing cars, car wash mitts are far superior.

How Do I Wash A Microfiber Car Wash Mitt?

Microfiber material can be hand-washed or machine-washed below 140°F / 60°C with Microfiber Wash. Do not use fabric softener. It can be hung to dry or tumbled dry, again below 140°F / 60°C, for the softest results.
