Many drivers use their SUV, 4X4, Crossover or Pickup truck during the week to go to work in a suburban environment but like to explore gravel and dirt back roads on the weekends. If you don’t want the hassle of swapping tires, All-Terrain tires, often abbreviated as A/T tires, might be your ticket to adventure and bring out the best in your vehicle. These tires strike a balance between the off-road capabilities of mud-terrain tires and the on-road comfort of highway tires.
All-Terrain tires perform excellent on many terrains. With A/T tires you can tackle both pavement as well as gravel, mud, snow, or sand. This versatility makes them popular among adventurous drivers who want reliable performance regardless of the terrain.
Most A/T tires are made with an All-Season compound so you can use them in a variety of weather conditions, even light snow. All-Terrain tires typically have a rugged appearance, with deeper and more aggressive tread patterns compared to normal All-Season tires. This design helps to get the best possible grip both on-road as off-road in challenging conditions. They also have a larger, reinforced sidewall with thicker rubber to protect from damages and punctures from rocks. The larger sidewall enables you to air them down if you need even more traction off-road without damaging your wheels.
All-Terrain tires are also an excellent choice if you have to haul or tow, because they perform great both on-road and off-road, in various weather conditions. Whether your pickup truck is loaded with lumber or you’re towing a camper or trailer, with A/T tires you can confidently drive on the highway, and then get off to continue your journey off-grid to get to your destination.
In this article, we’ll explore the different types of All-Terrain tires, their characteristics, and what you should consider when buying a set. We’ve made a selection of the best All-Terrain tires, depending on what terrain you’re likely to encounter. Our selection will make it easy to choose the right tire for your specific needs.

Different types of All-Terrain Tires
All-Terrain tires aim to strike a balance between the off-road capabilities of mud-terrain tires and the on-road comfort of highway tires. However, some All-Terrain tires are mainly engineered for off-roading with marginal highway use, while others excel on highways but are less suited to tackle a very rocky terrain. Others focus mainly on the aggressive look. When you buy new All-Terrain tires, make sure to pick the right type of tires to match your driving needs or lifestyle.
1. All-Terrain, Off-Road / On-Road
These tires are balanced for traction both off-road and on-road, but are made tougher for off-road adventures. They offer excellent traction in off-road conditions while maintaining reasonable on-road comfort and acceptable noise levels.
2. All-Terrain, On-Road / Off-Road
These tires are focused on on-road traction with some off-road capability. They offer better handling and reduced noise levels on highways. While they may not excel in extreme off-road situations, they provide a practical solution for drivers seeking versatility and convenience for light off-road adventures.
3. All-Terrain, Off-Road M/T
These special off-road tires, also called mud tires, are specifically engineered to provide maximum traction in muddy and extreme off-road conditions. Their focus is on off-road adventures in difficult terrain. They are noisier and have a stiffer ride quality on pavement than other All-Terrain tires. They tend to wear faster and offer less traction in wintry conditions.
4. All-Terrain, Rugged
Rugged All-Terrain tires look aggressive, but only offer moderate off-road capability. They have that cool off-road look but deliver mainly on-road performance. These tires are engineered for the suburban cruiser seeking on-road comfort combined with some occasional off-road performance.
If you want to upgrade your SUV, 4×4, Crossover or Pickup truck with All-Terrain tires, you want to pick a set of tires that suits your needs best. Make sure you choose a type of tire that matches your needs and lifestyle. Otherwise you”ll risk getting stuck in the middle of a steep rocky trail with a tire that only impresses with its looks, or go crazy with the humming noise of a tire that isn’t suited for long stretches of highway.

Things to consider when buying All-Terrain Tires
Although All-Terrain tires are designed to strike a balance between off-road and on-road driving, their aggressive tread pattern can be slightly less comfortable and generate more road noise than standard All-Season tires, especially at higher speeds on smooth pavement.
They also tend to wear faster. Much depends of course on your driving style (aggressive or relaxed) and the terrain the tires are used on (highways or mostly off-road gravel roads). Good alignment and balancing are crucial too, to prolong the tires’ lifespan and to make them wear more evenly. Regularly check tire pressure because over or under-inflation leads to uneven tire wear.
You might also consider rotating your tires every 5.000 or 10.000 miles or as recommended by the manufacturer, to prevent uneven treadwear.
Many drivers like “large and impressive” All-Terrain tires. They want to move up in tire size to have more ground clearance to avoid obstacles. You want to keep in mind that every vehicle has different tire fitment requirements. It’s essential to choose tires that are compatible with your vehicle’s specifications, including the correct size, load index, and speed rating. If you want to know what all those numbers on your tires mean, you might want to read “What Do The Numbers On Tires Mean? Tire Size Explained”. Check your vehicle’s owners manual to determine the appropriate tire size for optimal performance and safety. Your vehicles’ suspension, brakes and fender wells will also determine which tires will or won’t fit your vehicle.
If you want to haul or tow with your vehicle, make sure that the tire has a weight rating that is sufficient to handle the weight of whatever you plan to haul or tow.
While it is true that All-Terrain tires are slightly less fuel efficient compared to normal all-season tires, the difference is only a few percent. Their benefits and possibilities they offer however, are significant. If you bought a SUV or pickup to get away from the city and spend time outdoors off the beaten track, you do need tires that can help you do that.
Most All-Terrain tires can be used year-round, including in winter and light snow conditions. Although many A/T tires are branded with the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol (3PMSF), which means they provide a higher level of snow traction, they are not a replacement for dedicated winter tires in severe winter conditions.
How we did our review
Over the years we’ve tried and tested many different tires for our cars (older Jeeps, daily drivers, a sporty SUV, a new high-performance sports car, classic cars…) We tried several All-Terrain types for our Jeeps with mixed results.
For this review we dove deep in the manufacturer specifications and looked at numerous customer reviews to see what their experience was. Furthermore, we listened to what tire experts and tire centers had to say and what their opinion was. We only recommend All-Terrain tires from reliable tire manufacturers. All selected A/T tires do a great job at maintaining traction in different circumstances. We’ve selected All-Terrain tires depending on what mix of different terrain you will likely encounter. This will make it easy to choose the right tire for your specific needs.

The Baja Champion is making a comeback with the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2. This tire, from the creators of the world’s first All-Terrain tire, is a hot commodity in the off-road community. With the KO2, any pickup, SUV, or even crossover can instantly become a capable off-roader, delivering top-notch performance all year round, no matter the weather or road conditions. It is even branded with the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake Rating and exceeds the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) Severe Snow Traction performance requirements. It’s a tire with a rugged look that both performs off-road and behaves on the road.
Compared to its predecessor, the All-Terrain T/A KO, the KO2 boasts a 20% tougher sidewall thanks to BFGoodrich’s innovative CoreGard Technology. It’s inspired by the Baja T/A KR2, a tire that has conquered podiums. The KO2 has overall increased rubber thickness and a sidewall design that resists splitting and bruising. It can take a beating even on the most rugged trails. Additionally, BFGoodrich has integrated its Advanced Deflection Design system into the KO2. This innovative feature deflects protruding objects to prevent them snagging and splitting the sidewall.
The Interlocking Tread Elements stabilize the tread center and provide biting edges for maximum traction on both paved roads and off-road terrain. BFGoodrich’s signature feature, the Serrated Shoulder Design, maximizes grip in challenging conditions such as mud, snow, and rocky terrain, especially when the tire is aired down.
BFGoodrich has invested years in perfecting the KO2’s footprint shape. This results in a contact patch that evenly distributes the weight of your vehicle and cargo, and leads to longer-lasting performance. The unique locking 3D sipe design increases tread block stability so you can expect even wear throughout the life of your All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires.
BFGoodrich stands behind the All-Terrain T/A KO2 with a 50,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty, providing peace of mind for your on- and off-road adventures.
